Driving Restrictions and Senior Citizens

Table of Contents

California has a large population of seniors. According to statistics published by the State Controller’s office, more than 4 million people over 65 lived here in 2010, and that number is projected to grow to 6 million by 2020. Seniors are living longer, living active lives and wish to remain independent as long as possible. Driving remains an essential part of that equation, yet there are potential obstacles in keeping one’s driver’s license as we age.

In Person Renewal

Most of us typically renew our license on the internet or alternatively by mail. However, once you turn 70, even if you have an unblemished driving record, you will be required to go to a Department of Motor Vehicle office in person for your renewal, and you must do this every five years. Local Orange County offices are located at:

  • 1330 E. 1st Street, Santa Ana
  • 909 W. Valencia Drive, Fullerton

AT primary purpose of this in-person requirement is to permit DMV employees to assess you. If the DMV worker you see has any reason to suspect you have some physical or mental condition that could negatively impact your driving ability that employee can report you to the DMV and a further evaluation of you may be initiated.

Other Testing

It is not uncommon for senior drivers to be asked to take a written test based on information contained in the California Driver Handbook or a vision test. Vision issues can afflict many of us as we age, but many times the problems are correctable.

The DMV employs a variety of eye ing formats, including a wall chart, an eye machine test that is given at the DMV office or an examination by an independent licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist.

Third Party Involvement

Doctors are required to report information regarding any patient who suffers from any condition that can lead to lapses of consciousness. Additionally, a police officer who responds to a driving incident involving a senior citizen may have reason to be concerned. Concerned family members and friends can also contact the DMV to report a driver who they believe poses a danger.

Maintaining Your License

If after appropriate investigation and testing the DMV moves to suspend your license for a physical or mental condition, you have a right to a hearing on the matter and to be represented by a Fullerton traffic ticket attorney. Even if full privileges are not restored, you may be able to get a restricted license enabling you, for example, to drive in day time hours or in a specific neighborhood with which you are most familiar.
