DUI Mitigation Items

In some instances, the outcome of a DUI case can be improved by gathering items that show you are actively addressing the issues that led to your DUI charge. With that in mind, we have created a list of items for you to complete in the pursuit of the best possible outcome for your DUI case. The more items you complete, the better. If you have any questions or need additional guidance, please call our offices at 800-797-8406 or email Juan at jramirez@socaldefenselawyers.com.

1. Character Letters

These can be from family, friends, co-workers, bosses, etc. The letters should include the length of time they’ve known you and should include a phone number or email where the author of the letter can be reached. Some topics that may be featured in the letters can include how hardworking you are, your integrity, the positive impact you have on people’s lives, your contributions to your local community, etc.

Click below for a guide on character letters as well as a sample letter and template. Feel free to use them as a blueprint when asking friends and family for character reference letters, but ultimately, any character letter showcasing your positive impact in the community will be a plus. The more letters you can provide, the more helpful it will be.

2. Proof of Employment

Please provide pay stubs and/or an employment verification letter. This letter may contain length of employment, position, part-time/full-time status, etc.

3. School Diplomas, Awards, School Transcripts

Any diplomas and awards you’ve received, along with school transcripts.

4. Attend AA Meetings (3x a week recommended)

We strongly recommend you attend A.A. meetings 3 at least times a week. If you're attending in-person A.A. meetings, be sure to keep a record of all the meetings you attend. Click below to download our A.A. attendance sheet. Print it out and take it with you to each meeting so it can be dated and signed. Please send your attendance records each month to jramirez@socaldefenselawyers.com.

If you prefer to attend A.A. meetings virtually, there’s a website that allows you to attend meetings remotely: https://www.intherooms.com/

You can register for a free profile by creating a username and adding your email address. Go to https://www.intherooms.com/home/live-meetings/ to view the meeting schedule. Meetings are available every day of the week, all throughout the day.

When you attend meetings virtually via https://www.intherooms.com, you can request an attendance verification email after every meeting you attend. When you join a virtual meeting, press the "Request Attendance Confirmation" button to receive an attendance confirmation email. Please forward all attendance confirmation emails to jramirez@socaldefenselawyers.com.

5. Community Service

We strongly suggest you regularly participate in community service. This can be done through your local church or place of worship or you can find plenty of volunteering opportunities at https://www.volunteermatch.org/. There are virtual and on-site volunteer opportunities available to you through this site. Be sure to get a letter or email stating the type of volunteer program, number of hours per week volunteered, and the name and number of someone the court could contact to verify if necessary.

6. Enroll in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

We’d like to show that you are addressing the alcohol issues that led to your DUI charge. A great way of doing this is by having you enroll in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). You can search for an IOP near you here: https:// www.psychologytoday.com/us/treatment-rehab/intensive-outpatient-program/. Once completed, we’ll need the paperwork showing that you’ve successfully finished the program.

7. Regularly Attend Therapy

It’s important to show that you are continually addressing and maintaining a healthy relationship with alcohol. This is why we strongly advise you to regularly attend therapy. We’ll need a letter or email from your therapist stating when the treatment was started, how often you attend, and that you’re addressing the alcohol issue in therapy. The letter should include your therapist’s name and contact information and can be a letter on the therapist’s letterhead, a handwritten note, or email.
